13 Tips and Tricks for Attracting and Retaining Staff for Your Travel Center(s)

Creating a thriving workplace is a top priority for truckstop and travel plaza operators, but today’s operating environment is fraught with challenges.

NATSO’s HR Sharegroup meets regularly to discuss tips for attracting, training and retaining employees.

Here are more than a dozen tips and proven tactics from group participants.  

  • Faster background checks. Today’s workers have a lot of options and conducting a faster background check can help get workers onboard faster. One member uses a company called . It can complete a background check in as little as two hours. It still checks for the major issues such as theft.
     
  • Facebook. Post ads on . One group participant gets 57% of its applicants this way.
     
  • Focus on Culture. Culture is critical, especially in a post-COVID world. Spend more time on company culture to get back to the basics.
     
  • Talent Reef.  is a digital tool that allows employers to manage the pre-employment process.
     
  • Paylocity.  was recommended as a good applicant tracking company.
     
  • Work with Nonprofits. One member works with nonprofits that support people in need to hire those people.
     
  • . Work with state to help identify young adults that are not college bound for whatever reason.
     
  • AARP. Today’s workforce is truly multi-generational.
     
  • Rehire campaign. Create a campaign to rehire folks that moved on but may be ready to come back.
     
  • Schedule ahead. Publish your work schedule 30 days out. At one location, this was the number one reason employees stayed.
     
  • Close a section. If you’re short staffed, opt to close a section of the truckstop rather than asking people to come in on their day off.
     
  • Lyra. 
     
  • Fuel bonus. Offer a fuel bonus. The money can help get people to work.
