Highlights from ºÚÁÏÉçÇøConnect 2019

Truckstop and travel plaza operators came together in Orlando, Florida, for ºÚÁÏÉçÇøConnect 2019 and left inspired and informed. So many amazing things came out of the annual event. Here are a six highlights.

Insight Into the Future
We all want to know what the future holds, and much of ºÚÁÏÉçÇøConnect focused on helping operators prepare for the trends and technology that are coming down the pipeline.

During one keynote, ºÚÁÏÉçÇøPresident and CEO Lisa Mullings sat down with Dave Manning, president of TCW Inc. and Immediate Past Chairman of the American Trucking Associations as well as Dan Murray, vice president of the American Transportation Research Institute, to discuss the latest trends affecting truck drivers. Attendees got a first-hand look at how hours-of-service requirements, electronic logging devices and e-commerce are all changing professional drivers’ operating environment.

Coffee Cup Travel Plaza Adds Warmth and Space with Renovations

Gordon Price, national sales director at DAS Companies Inc., has spent a significant amount of time inside of truckstops and travel plazas throughout the country, which is why I so highly value his opinion. This week, I asked him to sit down with me for a Q&A about Coffee Cup Fuel Stops newly renovated location, which is in Vermillion, South Dakota.

Holiday Retail Sales are Important: Nine Ideas for What Your Truckstop Could Stock for the Holidays

As I type this we have 56 days until Christmas. If you have not ordered your LED Christmas Lights for drivers to hang on their trucks you may already be out of luck. What about that bag with a handful of charcoal briquettes inside strategically placed on the counter and sold for a buck or so? Everyone loves to get a bag of coal for Christmas. If you do not have Christmas and other holiday gifts and products in the store already, get on the phone now and get them ordered.

Holiday Retail Sales Are Important at Truckstops Too

I had the pleasure in the past three weeks to visit with owners and managers of a combination of 18 new and current member locations. I saw awesome stores with a lot of exciting happenings. I was, however, surprised to see how few of the operations had yet to prepare for the Halloween holiday let alone Christmas. We will talk Christmas on the next blog.

Inspiration from Ireland’s Travel Plazas

I always love the opportunity to learn from our fellow operators abroad. A few years back, ºÚÁÏÉçÇømembers had the chance to visit Irish travel centers during a European Study Tour. Recently, Tim Dumler, who is building a travel center in Castle Rock, Colorado, visited some travel plaza locations in Ireland for inspiration on his new build.

Golden Oil’s Truckstops Focus on Food and Cleanliness

Paul Bhardwaj, CEO and founder of Golden Oil, which operates four truckstops and is in the process of building its fifth, has been in the truckstop industry for more than 30 years. During that time, he has seen amenities and driver preferences change, and the locations do a fantastic job of staying current and remaining relevant.

Directional Signs at Jubitz Travel Center are Fun and Informative

With all of the cars and heavy-duty trucks coming and going at a truckstop or travel plaza, it is important drivers know where to go. Jubitz Travel Center in Portland, Oregon, has done a fantastic job with its directional signage, which provides customers with important information, improves the customer experience and increases safety.

Route 66 Food n Fuel Joliet Keeps Customers Moving

The Route 66 Food n Fuel location in Joliet, Illinois, is incredibly busy, and it can move through thousands of customers each day, especially during large events at the Chicagoland Speedway, which is adjacent to the location.
