Last week, the President signed into law a 90-day surface transportation extension. The House passed the bill 266-158, and the Senate followed suit, passing the measure under a unanimous consent request. This marks the ninth extension of the federal highway program since it formally expired in October 2009.
The Senate had urged the House to pass its two-year, $109 billion transportation bill instead of the extension. However, House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John Mica (R-Fla.) said the extension would give the House more time to work on reaching an agreement on its own five-year, $260 billion bill.
The extension expires June 30.
