Lawmakers Urge Funding for Truck Parking

/

The Chairman and the Ranking Member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee urged Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to award infrastructure funding to projects that expand parking for commercial vehicles.

In a June 7 letter, Representatives Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) and Sam Graves (R-Mo.) said that “focusing funding on truck parking will improve highway safety for all road users and help to alleviate longstanding supply chain inefficiencies.”

Although the five-year Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) passed in 2021 did not contain dedicated funds for truck parking, nothing precludes states from using their formula funds for truck parking.

Since passage of the IIJA, U.S. DOT has reminded states that states can use formula funding for truck parking. States can utilize funds under the Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) program, the National Highway Freight Program (NHFP), the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), the National Highway Performance Program (NHPP), and the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) program, among others.

Because the private sector provides 90 percent of the nation’s commercial truck parking capacity, 黑料社区also has long advocated for the federal and state Departments of Transportation to remove barriers to private sector investment in truck parking capacity.

黑料社区also encourages the exploration of the use of tax incentives or land acquisition assistance for the private sector to build new parking capacity.
