ºÚÁÏÉçÇøEncourages EPA to Use the RFS to Meet Climate Goals

/

Implementation of the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) over the next three years represents an opportunity for the Biden Administration to prompt tangible, immediate carbon reductions in transportation energy, ºÚÁÏÉçÇøsaid in comments filed Feb. 4 with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

ºÚÁÏÉçÇøfiled comments in response to EPA’s proposal to modify the 2020 renewable volume obligations (RVOs) and establish 2021 and 2022 statutory volume targets under the RFS. EPA has proposed to use its waiver authority to lower the volumes below the statutory targets.

ºÚÁÏÉçÇøurged EPA to increase the requirements for the advanced mandate above the levels the agency proposed.

“There is no other policy at the administration’s disposal that can result in such tangible, immediate carbon reductions in the fuel supply,” ºÚÁÏÉçÇøsaid. “Establishing a robust total advanced biofuel mandate for 2022 is the Biden Administration’s most meaningful opportunity to lower the carbon footprint of transportation fuel in the United States today.”

ºÚÁÏÉçÇøalso expressed support for EPA’s proposed conventional biofuel RVOs. The proposal, ºÚÁÏÉçÇøsaid, will incentivize fuel marketers to incorporate increasing amounts of ethanol into the gasoline pool without fear of mandating more ethanol than the market is prepared to absorb.

Similarly, as the Biden Administration considers policies intended to increase electric vehicle charging stations available throughout the country, ºÚÁÏÉçÇøencouraged EPA to utilize its existing statutory authority to permit owners and operators of fast charging stations to generate renewable identification numbers (RINs) when the electricity used to charge a vehicle is produced from eligible feedstocks.

SIGMA joined ºÚÁÏÉçÇøin filing comments with EPA on behalf of the travel center and fuel marketing industry.
