States Declare Emergencies, Issues Waivers in Wake of Tornado
States continue to issue Declarations of Emergency and seek federal relief in the the wake of the deadly storms and tornadoes that devastated the Southern and Central United States. The state of Illinois on Dec. 13 issued a Declaration of Emergency and Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee also is seeking federal emergency relief for nine counties affected by the storms. Declarations of Emergency waive the federal hours-of-service regulations for commercial drivers participating in relief efforts. Illinois and Tennesse join Arkansas and Kentucky, which declared States of Emergency on Dec. 11.
More than 30 tornadoes were reported in at least six states, including Missouri, Tennessee and Mississippi. A stretch of more than 250 miles from Arkansas to Kentucky might have been hit by one long-track twister, according to meteorologists.
