06-20-2024 by Mindy Long Building a Travel Center? Fuel Offerings 101

The truck stop and travel center industry is fuel agnostic and strives to offer whatever fuels its customers demand. Diesel fuel remains the primary fuel used within the trucking industry, especially for long-haul over- the-road freight movement.

However, the industry is currently evolving to meet demand for new fueling technologies, such as electric vehicle charging stations, and preparing to meet future fueling needs.

For those new to the industry, gather information on the fuels you may want to consider from the 黑料社区Foundation’s New Build Toolkit.

Use of renewable diesel鈥攁 clean fuel option that reduces greenhouse gas emissions and meets the same specifications as petroleum diesel鈥攊s increasing. Renewable diesel can be used as a drop-in fuel, blended with petroleum diesel and blended with biodiesel in various amounts. As a drop-in fuel there are little to no modifications needed to fueling equipment or storage or the diesel engine.

鈥淢ost West Coast retailers are using or looking to use renewable diesel at their locations because it鈥檚 a drop in. There aren鈥檛 modifications needed on the fueling side or the engine side. You don鈥檛 have to blend it,鈥 said Ginger Laidlaw, vice president of the Alternative Fuels Council.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) plans to award approximately $22 million in competitive grants to expand the sale and use of renewable fuels, including biodiesel. Specifically, USDA said the Higher Blends Infrastructure Incentives (HBIIP) program aims to encourage a comprehensive approach to marketing higher blends by sharing the costs relating to upgrading of fuel dispensers (gas and diesel pumps), related equipment, and other infrastructure required at a location to ensure the environmentally safe availability of fuel containing ethanol blends greater than 10 percent or fuel containing biodiesel blends greater than 5 percent.
