09-14-2017 by NATSO Senate Convenes Hearing on Automated Trucks

The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation convened a hearing Sept. 13 to explore automated vehicle technology for commercial trucks 鈥 including testing and deployment challenges as compared with highly-automated vehicles. Of interest to 黑料社区members, the hearing focused on whether separate standards should be required for highly-automated passenger vehicles and commercial trucks, and the potential employment challenges autonomous technology will have on the trucking industry. Committee Chairman John Thune (R-SD) and Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) on Sept. 8 released draft legislation on self-driving vehicles. Currently, the Thune-Peters draft legislation does not include regulations for commercial trucks.

12-07-2016 by NATSO House Continuing Resolution Contains Hours-of-Service Fix

The House Appropriations Committee on Dec. 6 released a Continuing Resolution funding the government through April 28 that contains a critical provision the trucking industry has sought for nearly a year. If enacted, the legislation would maintain the current 34-hour restart provision in the federal Hours-of-Service rule pending the results of a Congressionally mandated study.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit denied the Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association鈥檚 (OOIDA) challenge to the Department of Transportation鈥檚 rule mandating electronic logging devices on commercial trucks.

08-22-2016 by NATSO Speed Limiter Proposal Expected in Late August

The Department of Transportation (DOT) expects to issue a proposal to mandate speed limiters on heavy trucks on Aug. 26, the agency reported in its August Significant Rulemaking Report. The Office of Management and Budget cleared the proposal Aug. 12, marking the last step in the regulatory process before a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) is issued.
