EPA has released a proposed rule that would allow E-15 to be sold year-round (subject to certain restrictions) and also impose significant reforms in how RIN markets function. Although ºÚÁÏÉçÇøconsiders the RIN market reform component of the rulemaking unnecessary, EPA appears to have responsibly distinguished between ethanol RINS and RINS associated with advanced biofuels such as biodiesel. ºÚÁÏÉçÇøis continuing to analyze the proposal and will provide a more fulsome analysis in the coming days.
03-13-2019Over the last two years, there has been an extraordinary amount of uncertainty and volatility in renewable fuels and Renewable Identification Number (RINs) markets. This largely has been due to […]
10-24-2018President Donald Trump is expected Oct. 9 to lift a federal ban on summer sales of higher-ethanol blends of gasoline, a senior White House official told reporters. The move will be coupled with restrictions on biofuel credit trading sought by merchant refiners like Valero Energy Corp and PBF Energy Inc. Those rules would be aimed at retailers and oil majors accused by merchant refiners of driving up cost of complying with biofuels blending laws.
10-09-2018President Trump said May 8 that he is considering allowing the unrestricted sale of gasoline containing 15 percent ethanol and will let biofuel exports count toward refiners’ domestic renewable fuel obligations. The proposed changes follow months of fractious negotiations between the corn and oil industries over the future of the U.S. Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). However, major elements of the compromise remained in dispute after the meeting between top administration officials and four senators ended.
05-09-2018Twenty-one states will receive grants through the $100 million Biofuel Infrastructure Partnership (BIP) to help fund E-15 infrastructure for 5,000 pumps at 1,400 gasoline retail stations.
09-11-2015The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is seeking public comment on a proposed information collection request regarding several recordkeeping and reporting items associated with the agency’s rule that allows the sale of gasoline blends containing 15 percent ethanol or E-15.
04-03-2015The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia dismissed a lawsuit challenging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s dispenser label requirement for E-15 gasoline blends, ruling that the plaintiffs lacked legal standing to sue.
10-31-2014The Supreme Court has rejected a challenge by the American Petroleum Institute (API) to block sales of gasoline containing 15 percent ethanol (E-15).
06-24-2013The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) last week launched a new online resource where it will house information for tank owners regarding the compatibility of underground storage tank system components with E-15.
04-29-2013Fuel retailers who abide by the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) E-15 labeling rules would be protected from liability claims by consumers who misfuel their vehicles under a new bill introduced last week by Rep. John Shimkus (R-Ill.)
03-25-2013U.S. Senators Roger Wicker (R-M.S.) and David Vitter (R-La.) have introduced legislation to block an increase in the amount of ethanol that can be blended with gasoline. The bill would overturn Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) waivers that allowed gasoline containing 15 percent ethanol (E15) to be used for many passenger cars and light trucks, and would prohibit the agency from granting future waivers for any blends above 10 percent ethanol.
