The U.S. Department of Transportation鈥檚 Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) determined that federal law preempts California鈥檚 meal and rest break requirements for all motor vehicle operators that transport hazardous materials, granting a request from the National Tank Truck Carriers Association (NTTC).

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has adopted the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals as the new standard for hazard communication (HAZCOM). Effective Dec. 1, 2013, employers must ensure that employees are trained on the new labeling elements and Safety Data Sheet formats.
